The major theme of this workshop was informed as surgical robotics and haptics. The workshop was attended by 25-30 high school students from different schools mostly within Buffalo.
The primary presenters of the workshop included Dr. Venkat Krovi, who was joined by our collaborators (Dr. Frank C Mendel, Professor in Gross Anatomical Science and Dr. Sudha Garimella, Pediatrics Nephrologist) and our very own senior doctoral students -- Seung Kook (SK) and Madu.

The workshop highlighted different aspects of robotics with interesting "eye-catchy" simulations. Later, Dr. Mendel and Dr. Garimella discussed critical issues in conducting real surgeries and needle based percutaneous procedures successfully on real-life patients. The most highlighting aspect of this workshop was the interactive session between students and clinical physicians wherein the high school kids posed really challenging and interesting questions.

After the questioning session, there were demos setup that offered the students the opportunity to get hands-on with some of the tools we developed as a part of our research including bio-mechanical simulations, needle biopsy and haptic surgical simulations. The hands-on needle insertion demos along with the biopsy visualizer (CT and ultrasound scan) application proved to be the most attractive and informative. The workshop was well received both by the organizers as well as the participants. So, the last but not the least, we would like to extend our gratitude to the Buffalo Museum of Science organizers in providing us an opportunity to conduct this outreach workshop.

A day with the Da Vinci...

As a part of our collaborative research efforts, ARMLAB members visited a local hospital facility where we got an opportunity to operate the da Vinci (dV) surgical robot The morning session started with a briefing from the surgeons about device-setup, modular options, pre-surgical system checks as well as insights from their rich experiences conducting robotic surgeries. The topic of Priyanshu's poster is "Articulated Body Pose Estimation in Monocular Video" that is based on estimating body pose parameters "on-the-fly" with a monocular video sequence. The award recognizes the tackling of a challenging problem in the field of computer vision. In this work, the authors propose the use of dynamics-based statistical motion models (particle-filtering based framework) to estimate the pose of an articulated multi-body system, solely from monocular images .
It is to be noted that Priyanshu won this award amidst a group of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) research graduates who also participated in this competition.

Tech Savvy - 2011 Robotics Workshop

As has been the tradition over the previous years, the Automation, Robotics, & Mechatronics Laboratory hosted the Robotics Workshop and Outreach Program for the third consecutive time as a part of this year's "Tech Savvy 6-Tech Savvy Girls with No Limits… Anything! We had a farewell party for Luca at ARMLAB's favorite meet up spot -- "Kebab and Curry" which was attended by all the ARMLAB members.
We congratulate Luca on successful completion of his stint in ARMLAB and wish him all the best for a prosperous career.
At this juncture, we also would like to welcome our new ARMLAB member-- Dr. Wensong Hu, a visiting scientist from China. He brings with him a great deal of experience in the field of robotics and his research expertise is considered to be a greater boost to the ARMLAB community. More details about his work in ARMLAB will follow in the coming days...

Looming IEEE RAS Deadlines

**AIM 2011: 2011 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced
Intelligent Mechatronics.Budapest. 4-6 July 2011. Submissions deadline
extended to February 20, 2011. http://www.aim2011.org/
**ICMA 2011: 2011 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and
Automation. The number of papers presented during the symposium is small (less than 50) and the meeting is single track in order to maximize interaction between participants. Papers should focus on theories and principles, which have been validated by experiments, and on experimental paradigms and designs that inspire new theoretical approaches. Papers which discuss how theoretical conjectures were invalidated, revised, or confirmed and present details of experimental implementations and practice are of great interest.
The paper will be available for download after the conference! A video of the robot is shown here:

Colin Lea among five UB students nominated for Barry M. There is also increased interest in the model-based design-refinement and controller-development, which is critically dependent upon availability of underlying plant-models.
Kinematic and dynamic plant-models for AMBSs can be formulated by systematic application of physics postulates. This process, in its various variants, forms the basis of various mechanisms/robotics courses. However, the type and complexity of the example systems is often limited by the tractability of first generating and subsequently analyzing system equations of motion. Nonetheless, it should be noted that using simpler examples alone may sometimes fail to capture important physical phenomena (e.g. gyroscopic, coriolis). Hence, we examine the use of some contemporary symbolic- and numeric-computation tools to assist with the automated symbolic equation generation, sensitivity analysis and development of model based controllers to enhance various robotics courses..."

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 175px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qVqLs1DHK6E/TG6ki5uBq9I/AAAAAAAADDY/qjePQUnGoLs/s400/ASEE_Figure1_horizontal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507520313837071314" />

Download the paper from:
Hrishi Shah, Sumit Tripathi, Leng-Feng Lee, and Venkat Krovi, "Role of Automated Symbolic Generation of Equations of Motion to Enhance Engineering Education", ASEE Computers in Education Journal Special Issue: Novel Approaches in Robotics Education, Vol 1, No.3, pp. 2-20, July-September 2010.
